Food for thought.

Friday 30th July, 2010.

Hello everyone, I had planned on talking about food today and sharing a few pointers on using wattleseed but that will have to wait. You know how ‘they’ have that saying; Man can’t exist on food alone, or something similar I never did learn it because I love food so much. While things have been cruising along at Lexie’s, even with one of our illustrious leaders visiting her father in New Zealand for the week (half her luck). Alot of planning has been going on for upcoming events around the nation and I thought I’d mention a few.

My wife and I are expecting our second child very soon and some of the stories this week definitely had a tug at the ol’ heart strings. No doubt many of you saw the front page of this morning’s Herald, the story of courageous six month old Molly Jane was touching and is just one of the reasons I would like to encourage you to support Jeans for Genes day on Friday 6th August – it is fundraisers like this that may help bring about a better treatment, earlier detection or cure for child genetic diseases like carnitine acylcarnatine translocase deficiency that little Molly has and the dozens of other, more common diseases that 1 in 20 children born suffer with. This Sunday is National Tree Day – a Planet Ark initiative to celebrate Australian trees and plant for the future hoping to plant 1 million native trees and shrubs in 2010. In association with this, the Australian Rainforest Foundation have set up a gift-a-tree fundraiser, with a focus on regenerating Queensland rainforest where many of our native ingredients come from and home to the endangered Cassowary, dozens of species of insect, reptiles, animals and birds that play an integral role in the ecosystem of the world’s oldest rainforest. For more information go to www.forestoflife.com.au and http://treeday.planetark.org/

And also closer to home -entries are now open for The Big Beach Challenge. A charity event incorporating a 32km run along the beach, with proceeds going to Harry’s House. The Harry Meyn Foundation has just established Harry’s House in Stockton which allows families of sick children who need to travel to the Hunter for treatment to stay close and/or seek a retreat to enjoy the beautiful Stockton beach and township. The Big Beach Challenge will be held on Saturday, 21 August 2010. For more information you can go to http://bigbeachchallenge.net

Back to food next week, til then please give these worthy causes a thought. Thank you.

Til next week, Peace and Good Eating.
